Project Overview

An Artist-led Participation Residency

2 February - 18 February 2012

Site Gallery is developing an artist-led participation programme. A time and a place is a project to develop a team of artists who are interested in working with people. The best work in this field comes when artists work with communities of interest in a way that both builds their own practice and is also creatively engaged and collaborative with the people who are participating.A time and a place includes mentorship and professional development for artists would like to develop their work in this field, as well as the opportunity to test out running a workshop, event or small scale project at Site Gallery.

Residencies
Site Gallery is inviting applications for 10 micro-residencies for Sheffield-based emerging artists who are interested in developing a participatory strand to their practice.

For two weeks, from 7th-18th February, Site’s galleries will be turned over to the residents who will programme a series of events, workshops, screenings and talks aimed at different groups of people.

This will include:
• Attending a three-day workshop with the other 10 artists and a small team of experienced mentors.
• Developing work in Site’s galleries with different groups of people within the
ten-day period of the project (7th-18th February).
• A public opening event on the evening of 7th February and a closing
event on the 18th February.

What will you get?

• Meet Other Sheffield-based Artists
The ten artists will come from a variety of artistic practices, providing an opportunity for collaboration and exchange.

• Work in a Group Environment
You can develop your proposal with the help of a mentor and through conversations with the other artists. The gallery will be made available to the A time and a place artists throughout the preparatory period, where you can convene and work through your ideas.

• Support and Mentoring
Talks and presentations will be organised for the artists to give some context to participation, audience engagement and Sheffield as a site of interest. The focus will be on building a critical art practice which includes working with people including young people.

• Experience and Exposure
Site Gallery will make the exhibition space available to your proposals throughout the preparatory and project phases. Artists are each assigned one day for which they will be entirely responsible of the events taking place in the gallery between the 7th and 18th of February.

Who should apply?
These residencies are aimed at early career artists.

We have allocated 5 of the residencies for artists who are within 5 years of graduating and can demonstrate an interest in expanding their practice into a participatory field.

The other 5 places have been reserved for artists who may have developed a practice through a less formal educational route.

All of the participants must have a genuine interest in working with people and an understanding of associated issues (ethical and practical) demonstrated through their previous experience.
